TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN paid to a Co Kildare teenager who died tragically yesterday.

13-year-old Oisín Quigley drowned after getting into trouble in the Lyreen River near Maynooth yesterday afternoon.

It’s understood that Oisín, a second-year student at nearby Maynooth Post Primary, had jumped into the river in an attempt to save one of his two friends who he had been walking with along the river-bank.

He was taken to Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin along with his friends but died a short time later.

Oisín’s two friends have since been released from hospital.

“We learned last evening of the death of Oisín Quigley, one of our students,” Maynooth Post Primary said on its Facebook page.

This is a terrible tragedy for the Quigley family, for Maynooth Post Primary School, Maynooth Community College and our community.
We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Quigley family and friends and the other students involved in the incident.

The school has cancelled an event this Saturday as a result of Oisín’s tragic loss.

Earlier, the school’s principal Johnny Nevin told RTÉ’s News at One that Oisín was a “beautiful boy, kind, caring” student with a “bubbly personality” who was “very popular at school”.

Nevin said a service had been held in Oisín’s memory this morning at the school.

“He will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” he said.

Oisín’s funeral will take place this Saturday morning at St Mary’s Church, Maynooth.
