Step back in time: Here's how Dublin used to look

The postcards capture what life was like in Dublin all those years ago.

LAST WEEK WE brought you old postcards that feature scenes from around the country from Cork to Donegal.

The postcards are all part of the Eclectic Collection that is going up for auction today at Whyte’s Auction House in Dublin.

The lots range from about €50-€150 and include great images of old Dublin and how it used to be.

Has it changed much? Take a look.

I was just thinking the same! They seem to have run everywhere! They even ran out as far as blessington. There’s barely a bus out there now!

because in the 50′s they claimed they were in the way of the cars. many bus routes are realigned on the old tramways like the 15. they didn’t pull the tracks up though. just tarmac over them. the gaugeways are also thinner

Until around the middle of the last century Dublin was in the top 3 for cycling cities in Europe, and with the tram system it was a city for people…
Large straight chunks of land were demolished to make straight wide roads into the city centre for the Motor car.. Now we have a city centre for cars rather than people…

Exactly Intergra. We should reclaim the quays from cars too. I still love Dublin though, what an amazing place to live, so vibrant, so full of fun and friendly people. Punches so far above it’s weight. Top notch really.

If you don’t think Dublin is great you obviously don’t get out much. There’s a myriad of reasons why Dublin is a world class city, when you find them you can’t help but love it.

Astounding how few trees there were & how clean the streets appeared.

I love the lack of clutter on the buildings also. I think they should pass a law banning on building billboards and signs (shop signs to be set within standards).

They should try and run an old tram on the Luas cross city when it’s finished during the summer. Be great to see it going from Stephens Green to O’Connell street and the tourists would love it.

Grafton street was beautiful, the canopies over the shops, the cobbled streets, the Guinness ships, the Lady Patricia, the Lady Gwendoline and the Lady Miranda tied up at the quay, the old black bicycles, the fruit market, the smell of pipe smoke, my dad towing our sand buckets and shovels and picnic in a pram behind his bicycle out by Fairview to Dollymount, the black moria , the silver buttons on a policeman’s uniform, the smell of fresh bread from the bakery, the butcher boy with the big basket on his bike, Brendan Behan sitting on the bench at the canal, boys with sling shots, girls skipping at lamp posts, memories and the ghosts of Dubliner’s, close your eyes and you stand in the lamplight.
