The Green Party measure would reportedly cost around €20 million a year.

CHILDREN’S MINISTER RODERIC O’Gorman is proposing a once-off child benefit payment of €560 to parents in the first month their child is born, the Irish Independent has reported.

The idea is being pitched ahead of the upcoming budget to help new parents meet the “initial up-front costs” of having a baby, without having to borrow money or dip into savings.

Parents currently receive €140 a month in child benefit once their child is born.
