ACCORDING TO A PR survey that dropped into our inbox this morning, there’s a lot of people out there who don’t bother to return things they’ve bought online – even if they know they’ll never use or wear them.
An Post (who ran the survey because of its ReturnPal app) discovered just 25% of people will actually return items they’re not happy with.
One third of people they spoke with said they don’t return unsuitable goods because it’s “too much hassle”.
Which camp are you in? Do you bother returning stuff you’ve bought online?

@Sinead m: Any returns I’ve sent back have been free, usually with parcel motel or similar. You should check into the companies return policy.
@Trevor Beale: I was going to say the same Trevor we have a postal store in town and their incredible value. Only 9.95 for a parcel up to 30 kg anywhere in Ireland. Parcel to U.K. only 15 Euros. And incredibly they have the tender for delivering the An Post parcels as well as their own. Goes to show how badly An Post must be run when you look at the price differences

I’m part of a group of 9% who don’t shop online. Never expected the number to be that low.
@Peter Cavey: I am with you. I was wondering how many people would return stuff they bought in any case from a shop if they did not want to keep it.

There is an auto return as soon as you get married and the passport sorted. However, return costs are not just shipping costs, there is also 50% of everything you own plus payment every month for the rest of your life and legal fees too

Returning stuff is your basic right while buying online. I pretty often buy 2-3 pieces extra just in case I like the item or want different color / size – then I return it if I don’t like it. Seriously I thought everybody do same..?
I Shop online but have never had to return anything. On the few occasions I’ve had an issue, I’ve contacted the seller with photos of the problem and they’ve re shiped the item without needing a return
Littlewoods yes, as for my recent purchase u wasn’t bothered. Pair of shorts. Too lazy. Try receiving something from China and seeing the cost to send back.
Why would you buy without checking the returns policy. If I had to pay the postage on returns then I don’t buy from that shop.
The returns in store if you live near enough, is very easy.

I don’t shop online have witnessed so many cock up’s in this field of shopping while it adds to the loss of jobs.

Would those lost jobs be in the logistics industry delivering them to your front door or maybe in tech companies selling you the technology you use to buy them or perhaps the telcos that sell you your mobile phone plan or home broadband. If not how about the jobs in the data protection office or the jobs in Fintech helping to make the payment possible.

Another pointless poll, if people aren’t returning stuff bought online they really aren’t going to make time to participate in this poll. I fear for the future
I always ask if they want me to return the item. If they say “yes” I return it, if not I bin it.
If it’s reasonably low value and the vendor wants it to be returned I usually just say ‘it’s too much hassle so I’ll take the hit and leave accurate feedback’…. 9 out of 10 times they refund without return.
