Open thread: What's the best thing you've ever done to save money?

Tell us all the best (or most bonkers) ways you’ve saved yourself a bit of cash.

WE’RE NEARLY THERE, guys.

The end is nearly in sight. The dark financial month of January is almost over, and payday looms large on the horizon (thank God).

If the last few weeks have got you thinking about getting your proverbial house in order, financially speaking, then you are most certainly not alone.

So in the spirit of a shared “last weekend before payday in January” feeling, we’re asking you to share some of the best (or funniest) ways you’ve ever heard of saving a few shekels.

We’ve got some practical suggestions to start you off – and a more bonkers one too.

Making a meal of it

Meal planning is a godsend when you’re a bit strapped for cash. One big supermarket shop can yield an amazing amount of delicious meals for your entire week – if done with a bit of forward planning. You won’t realise how much you’ll actually get out of that roast chicken until you’re plotting out next week’s sandwiches, soups and curries.

Gone in 60 seconds

Set up a direct debit for the day you get paid – ideally, fork over your rent, utilities, phone bill and some savings (if you can spare the dough) in one fell swoop. You won’t miss what you never had.

And finally…

Well, that’s one way to save cash, but there are some others… We’ve all had (or been) that flatmate who is a bit too fond of saving the odd penny. Including one staffer in Journal Media Towers with a ex-flatmate who used to re-use tea bags up to four times each – and get hopping mad if they were chucked before they were “finished.”

And we’ve all that the housemate who saves money by eating everyone else’s food…
