Watch: Boy-racer ostrich gives cyclists a run for their money

The competitive bird joined up with cyclists preparing for the Cape Argus Tour in South Africa.

ANIMALS ARE ROUTINELY better than humans at lots of things. But that doesn’t mean they have to show off about it.

These cyclists were minding their own business preparing for the Cape Argus Tour in South Africa, when a cocky ostrich decided to show them how it’s done.

And boy can he move. Once the huge bird joined the fray it easily kept pace with the cyclists at 50 km/h (32 mp/h).

Rider Oleksiy Mischenko, who posted the video, says in the description of his YouTube video that “I thought I gonna fell off my bike from laughter”.

He’s not joking. After their feathered companion shows up Mischcenko’s helmet-camera betrays the fact he’s in hysterics.

Fortunately the ostrich left the riders to their own devices after a brief period. Mischcenko thinks he knows why the animal gave chase though:

“My guess he wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend, I bet she was very impressed.”
