HALF OF IRISH technology companies are finding it difficult to source the talent they require, a new survey has revealed.
The Irish Software Association survey also found that eight out of ten companies have plans to hire in the next three months.
The association’s Digital Technology Index was carried out among 728 Irish CEOs and founders and 72 per cent of respondents said they expect revenues to rise in the coming year, with 27 per cent expecting that increase to be “substantial”.
Over one-third of CEOs said that access to funding remained an issue, while 63 per cent said that they were more confident in their companies than they were three months ago.
Commenting on the results, Edel Creely, Chair of the ISA, said that the sector is creating more jobs than there are people to fill them.
“Between multinationals and Irish companies, the IT sector is generating more jobs than there are skilled Irish people to fill them. Conservative estimates put the number of IT vacancies at 4,000. According to an EU study, the EU labour market could face an excess demand of 384,000 IT practitioners by 2015.
We need to drive more graduates into IT-related college programmes, and adapt our education system as a whole, so that it is responsive to the demands of this sector.
