Two men charged over sectarian murder of Paul McCauley

The man’s injuries left him in a vegetative state for nine years before his death last year.

A SECOND MAN has been arrested over the murder of Paul McCauley in Derry in 2006.

McCauley was attending a barbecue in July 2006 when a number of people came out of the bushes and attacked him and two of his friends.

His injuries meant he was unable to move or communicate and required 24-hour care. He died almost nine years later in a care facility, at the age of 38, after years on life support.

Police have said the attack on the Catholic civil servant was unprovoked and sectarian.

Yesterday, a 61-year-old man was arrested in Kent in England and brought to Northern Ireland for questioning. He was charged with withholding information today.  He will appear before the courts on 4 May.

A 28-year-old arrested in Derry yesterday has been charged with murder, grievous bodily harm (GBH) and attempted GBH. He will appear at a courthouse tomorrow morning.

A 27-year-old also arrested yesterday has been released on bail pending a report being submitted to the Public Prosecution Service.

“We said after Paul died that this investigation would take on a renewed momentum and this momentum is continuing,” commented detective chief inspector Michael Harvey.

“One person has been charged with murder and another individual has been reported to the public prosecution service. Detectives are available to speak with anyone who decides they want to talk to us.

Even after almost ten years, it is not too late to do the right thing and come forward.”

One man has already been charged with the murder.

Comments are closed as the matter is now before the courts.
