Irishman dies after workplace accident in Australia

Paul Walsh had been working to install the country’s National Broadband Network.

AN IRISHMAN HAS been killed while working abroad.

Paul Walsh had been employed as a contractor with a company working on the rollout of Australia’s National Broadband Network in Katoomba, an area of New South Wales.

In a statement on its website, the chief executive officer of the National Broadband Network Bill Morrow said that it was “tragic news” and the company were doing all they could to help.

“The thoughts of everyone at National Broadband Network are with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased at this very sad time,” he went on.

Walsh, who was a native of Rhue in the Tubbercurry area of Sligo, died following the accident last Friday.

The Sligo native had been a member of the Tourlestrane GAA club, and a minutes silence was held for him before a match yesterday.

Writing on their Facebook page on Sunday, the club said that it was “deeply saddened” to learn of Walsh’s passing, and that he had played at corner back before emigrating to Australia.

The club would like to offer sincere condolences to his mother Elizabeth, brother John and all of the extended Walsh and Gilmartin families, neighbours and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad.

All fixtures due to take place at the weekend were postponed out of respect for Walsh.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have confirmed that they are providing consular assistance to the family of a man who died in Australia.
