Pensioner killed in Mullingar crash

Two others were injured in the collision in the eastbound lane of the N4 last night.

A MAN IN HIS eighties has been killed in a crash near Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Two other people were taken to hospital after the two-vehicle collision, but their injuries were described as minor.

The accident happened when two vehicles hit each other in the eastbound lane of the N4 dual carriageway at The Downs, Mullingar at around 9pm last night.

The man in his eighties was the driver of one of the vehicles. He was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

A man and a woman who were in the other vehicle were taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

The road was closed for forensic examination, but has since reopened. Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact Mullingar garda station on 044 938 4000, or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.
