ONE IN THREE people in Ireland are concerned about losing their homes as they struggle to deal with financial difficulties, a new report has found.
The study, released by homeless charity the Simon Community, also found that the number of people concerned about the rising levels of homelessness has almost doubled since the survey was last carried out in 2010.
The charity said it had seen an increase in the number of people turning to its services for support as the recession continues to affect many people across the country.
The statistics tally with recent figures which found the number of homeowners who have fallen into arrears with their mortgage has risen to its highest level to date, with 10.9 per cent of all mortgages now in arrears of at least three months.
A Simon Community spokesperson said that almost half of people who use its services have at least one mental health condition and 65 per cent have at least one physical health condition.
“People have become more vulnerable during the recession because of job losses, housing pressures and increased levels of poverty,” Niamh Randall of Simon Community said.
Just over 1,500 people around the country were questioned for the Irish Charity Engagement Monitor study.
