Homelessness campaigner Fr Peter McVerry. PA Images

Peter McVerry 'has never been more depressed' about housing as homelessness tops 10,000

For the first time since the pandemic, the number of adults and children registered as homeless has reached five figures.

IRELAND’S ONGOING HOUSING crisis is the one of the “longest and most severe” the country has seen, a housing campaigner said.

Macdara Doyle claimed the housing policies brought in by successive governments have failed to tackle the crisis.

The Raise the Roof campaign today announced plans for a series of regional and national public meetings on the housing crisis over the coming weeks.

At a launch event in Dublin, the group said it will hold the meetings in a bid to build public support for solutions to the crisis and alternative policies on housing.

Fr Peter McVerry, who has worked in homelessness services for over 40 years, said he has “never been more despaired or depressed” about the state of Ireland’s housing.

He also called on the government to implement the 1973 Kenny report, which contained measures for controlling the price of building land in the “interests of the common good”.

McVerry said the measures contained in the report, published almost five decades ago, will reduce the cost of housing by at least 30%.

How can we bring down the cost of rents? My proposal, which will never be accepted, is to reduce rents across the board by 25%, reduce the tax that landlords pay on their rental income by 50%.

He added: “That’s a win-win for renters and landlords.”

McVerry also called on the government to extend the eviction ban for another three years after a similar measure was used during the pandemic to protect renters.

“We need to get (the right to housing) into the constitution. We need to move fast because in December Fine Gael take over the Taoiseach’s office and Fine Gael have always been opposed to the right to housing in the constitution,” Fr McVerry added.

On Friday, it emerged that the number of homeless adults and children has risen above 10,000 for the first time since the pandemic.

According to Department of Housing figures for April, there are 7,105 adults and 2,944 children registered as homeless – a total of 10,049.

Doyle, the campaign’s co-ordinator, described the housing crisis as one of the “longest and most severe” the country has seen, adding:

We have an affordability crisis for renters and homebuyers with virtually an entire generation of young workers and families now locked out of the housing market.

“We also have a serious security-of-tenure crisis in the rental sector that has seen evictions almost triple since pandemic restrictions were lifted.

“We know that evictions are the single greatest cause of homelessness and so the cycle repeats and the downward spiral continues.

The policies of successive governments have failed to tackle these multiple crises and have arguably made them worse. We have a remarkable capacity to keep repeating the same failed policies and to keep expecting different outcomes.

“There’s a common thread that runs through Rebuilding Ireland and Housing for All and it’s namely that the state has effectively abandoned its role in the direct housing provision and outsources to private interests.

“We are convinced that this crisis will continue to deepen until the state reverses this policy and once again takes a leading role in housing provision, tackles affordability, delivers genuine security for tenants, and creates a new legal right to housing.”

Workers

Phil Ni Sheaghdha, general secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) and current vice president of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, said provision of public services will be affected if its workers cannot afford to live in cities.

Ni Sheaghdha also said that essential workers and students should have the right to live in subsidised housing beside their place of work, including public hospitals and health care facilities.

“We’re now in a situation where students can’t source accommodation and you’d want to have pretty wealthy parents in order to afford rent,” she added.

“This will leave us in a situation where only those who have sufficient funds can become the future of our country and we believe that that is focused on elitism at a level that just cannot be acceptable to anybody.

Student nurses, for example, have long been on a campaign to have their accommodation costs covered because they don’t get paid at all.

The series of regional and national public meetings will hear from housing experts, trade unions, political parties, and people directly affected by the crisis.

Political response

Sinn Féin Eoin Ó Broin TD today welcomed the re-launch of the Raise the Roof housing campaign, saying that “he housing crisis is getting worse”.

“Homelessness is rising. Rents and house prices continue to spiral out of control. Social and affordable housing delivery are way below what is needed,” he said.

It is clear that neither the Minister for Housing, nor the government, have the political will to introduce the kinds of policies that will reverse these trends. They continue to implement the same failed private sector led approach of the previous government.

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon in response to the homeless figures, Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath said the increase homelessness was “deeply regrettable” and that the government was taking action.

“This is the number one priority for government. We are investing a record amount of money to increase supply of all forms of housing, public housing, cost rental, the introduction of new affordable schemes and also working with the private sector and indeed the Land Development Agency,” he said.

“We are seeing progress in relation to supply, that is ultimately the solution here. Nearly 35,000 homes commenced construction in the year to March 2022, which the highest rolling 12 month figure since records began and we will deliver close to 12,000 social homes this year, of which 9000 will be new builds.”

I think his point is ,was his body nicked to prevent a political statement ? Italy yet again has a National Socialist problem ,but nicking bodies is not the way to tackle it.

Why don’t you tell your boss in the morning Steve to go and sh*te!You are not following his orders any more. You’ll lose your job most likely. Then imagine your boss has the ability to make your life outside work, a living hell. He can through his influence easily ostracise you and your family from society and perhaps in some circumstances, even have you killed for disobeying his orders. Saving your life, your livelihood, your children’s reputation and future was not an excuse to follow orders, it was reason to survive. Also, quite simply, trained soldiers obey orders otherwise the whole military experiment does not work!

We cant imagine decision making in such a horrific scenario as WW2. Nothing was normal with Nazi Germany. What he done was wrong. You know that.I know that. He even knew that but his priorities at that time were different and now we’ll never know what they were.

Seriously, all I said was that the Fine Gael TDs who voted to make legal the intentional killing of unborn children said the same thing “We were only following orders”. Weird that that is deleted or “gone missing”, when it’s actually true. All the so called Catholic TDs said they had to do it or they’d be thrown out of the party and lose their jobs! The triple lock whip was used to make them obey orders. Of course that is no excuse.

Thanks Aoife for responding, but it is relevant. Your article says “Priebke also defended his actions at the Ardeatine Caves, saying the orders to shoot the civilians came from Adolf Hitler himself and that members of his SS unit were told they would be shot if they didn’t obey.”

Anyone who coerces others to obey is in my opinion not fit for office – and in the case of abortion where we believe it is murder of innocent unborn babies, then it is atrocious. However, I’ll not mention it again in this article.
