'Absolutely no regard for the community': Two viable pipe bombs found in Derry

The discovery came just a day after a viable explosive was discovered near a Remembrance Day event.

PSNI DETECTIVES ARE appealing for information after two viable pipe bomb type devices were discovered in Derry yesterday.

The security alert was sparked after a member of the public spotted two suspicious looking objects on Montgomery Close in the Waterside area of Derry.

The discovery came just a day after the discovery of a viable explosive near a Remembrance Day event close to the site of the Omagh bombing in Tyrone.

Detective Inspector Lindsay Fisher said that roads were closed and homes were evacuated while officers attended the scene.

“The safety of the community is of paramount importance and we will not take any risks,” Fisher said. “However, I want to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this operation as we worked to bring it to a conclusion.

Thankfully, nobody was injured because of the reckless actions of criminals who showed absolutely no regard for the community by placing two potentially deadly devices in a built-up area.

The bombs were made safe and brought for further forensic examination.

Fisher said the public should remain vigilant, and report anything suspicious to the police immediately.

DUP MLA for Foyle, Gary Middleton said that the discovery will “be of concern to everyone in the community”.

He said: “We need to hear a united message from across the community that such actions have never been justified and they will never be successful.”
