An Irish family was ordered to pay more than €9,000 to an au pair yesterday.

YESTERDAY SAW A landmark judgement as an Irish family was ordered to pay a Spanish au pair more than €9,000 over her low wages.

The ruling in the Workplace Relations Commission makes it clear that if you hire an au pair, you are an employer and the employee has certain rights. However, some parents have argued it is a different arrangement as au pairs live with the family and enjoy other perks.
