MORE THAN ONE billion people turned on their television sets to watch Queen Elizabeth II officially open the 2012 Olympic Games last night.

Danny Boyle directed a lavish opening ceremony which featured British film, music and television stars, as well as thousands of volunteer musicians, dancers and singers.

Highlights included comedy moments from Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean, an emotional hymn from Scot Emeli Sandé and a surreal video starring the Queen, her dogs and James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
