Poll: Do you think the 2008 bank guarantee was the right decision?

This day five years ago, the government made a decision to issue a €440 billion guarantee on all liabilities in the Irish banking system.

ON THE 30 September 2008, a €440 billion blanket guarantee was issued that covered all liabilities in the Irish banking system.

Over the past five years there has been much debate about what happened that evening and whether it was the right decision for the country. Some argue that there was no other option but to guarantee the liabilities, while critics against the guarantee say it went too far.

In today’s poll, in hindsight of the past five years, we ask: Do you think the 2008 bank guarantee was the right decision?

Poll Results:

Yes, but it should not have covered all liabilities. (2430)
No (2268)
I don't know (924)
Yes (179)
