Poll: Should there be mandatory sentences for assaults on gardaí?

Representatives say current legislation is not enough of a deterrent for violent criminals.

DETAILS HAVE EMERGED of a ‘frenzied’ attack on a garda in Cork, after which the man suffered post-traumatic stress symptoms.

In another incident reported yesterday, four gardaí were injured when their car was rammed by fleeing burglars.

It is estimated that around 1,000 gardaí are assaulted in the line of duty each year. Garda representatives have long been calling for mandatory sentences to be imposed on people convicted of assaulting members of the force.

We want to know what you think: Should there be mandatory sentences for assaults on gardaí?
