Conlan lost to Russian Vladimir Nikitin in the bantamweight quarter-final in controversial circumstances after appearing to dominate the bout.

YESTERDAY’S DEFEAT OF Irish bantamweight boxer Michael Conlan has brought a cloud of controversy down over the judging standards both in amateur boxing and at the Olympic Games in general.

Prior to this Olympics, the separate issue of doping in athletics was very much to the forefront of conversation after the controversial decision to allow Team Russia to compete after the majority of their track and field athletes were found to be guilty of systematic doping.

For many however, the games remain compulsory viewing, showcasing the incredible camaraderie and achievement of world-class athletes pushing their bodies to the absolute limit.

But has yesterday’s result changed your perception?
