But an online petition in Italy to shorten the summer holidays has gathered a lot of traction, gaining over 60,000 signatures.

In Italy, the school summer holiday lasts for 14 weeks and some parents say they are sick of entertaining their children over the summer.

“We’re stuck with the old agriculture-based calendar when kids had to stop school in June to work in the fields, but that was 100 years ago,” said one mother to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

So with the summer holidays drawing to a close, we want to know: Are the school summer holidays too long?
