Poll: Should tourists be allowed to buy cannabis in the Netherlands?

New laws will stop tourists from buying marijuana – is this the right move?

IT HAS BECOME famous for its relaxed laws around marijuana, but now the Netherlands is introducing new laws to clamp down on drug use by tourists.

A Dutch court has upheld a government plan that will ban tourists from buying the drug at coffee shops by introducing a ‘weed pass’ which will only be available to Dutch citizens and permanent residents.

The government argues that the move will crack down on drug tourists and couriers who drive over the border from neighbouring countries to buy marijuana which they can sell in their own countries. Opponents argue that the move will affect tourism and put an end to the country’s image as a tolerant and open-minded society.

What do you think – should tourists be allowed buy marijuana in the Netherlands?
