The Porsche 996 has performance, pace and practicality in one desirable package

The Porsche 996 Turbo is a fabulous driver’s car.

IF I HAD the money I’d buy…

A car that is sleek and fast and fun to drive. A car offering magnificent performance in one compact and practical package. I’d buy a Porsche 996 Turbo.

Why a Porsche 996 Turbo?

Porsche makes some of the most engaging cars ever built with super handling. The Porsche 996 model was the 911 sold from 1999 to 2005 and has been called the “first Porsche supercar of the modern era”. The 996 generation was also the first water-cooled 911.

With its four-wheel drive system, water-cooled engine and slick five-speed Tiptronic gearbox the Porsche 996 Turbo is a very capable, all-weather, all-road performance car.

What’s special about this particular one?

This particular 2003 example is price at €53,950 and is in great condition. It was been very well maintained. The alloy wheels and brake calipers have been professionally refurbished and the tyres are nearly new. The interior features sumptuous deep pile carpet, Alcantara roof lining and black leather seats. It also has a sunroof and upgraded head unit with sat-nav.

Under the hood is a derivative of the legendary Mezger engine, as found in the 911 GT1 Le Mans racer and 996 GT3. This 3.6-litre water-cooled twin turbocharged/intercooled H-6 engine produces 415hp at 6000rpm and 563Nm of torque helping the car get from a standstill to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

What does it look like in action?

Well, it looks mighty capable on track, that is until Jeremy Clarkson gets behind the wheel and spins it.

It costs €53,950. What else could you get for the money?

Got your heart set on a two-door four-seat coupe? Then for roughly the same money, you could have this 2017 Audi A5.

… or this 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
