Gangland figure dies in Portlaoise Prison while serving life for murder

Eugene Cullen was serving a life sentence for his involvement with the murder of Seamus O’Byrne.

A MAN WHO was jailed over the murder of a father-of-two has died in Portlaoise prison.

Eugene Cullen was serving a life sentence for his involvement with the murder of Seamus O’Byrne in Tallaght in 2009.

O’Byrne was targeted due to his friendship with a rival gang leader, Brian Rattigan. O’Byrne’s partner was Rattigan’s sister Sharon, who was also shot during the attack.

She gave evidence during Cullen’s trial. Another man was also sentenced to life for the murder.

Cullen was found dead in his cell at the prison early this morning and foul play is not suspected.

Sources within the prison say that the death appeared to be an overdose.

The Irish Prison Service said that it could only confirm that a death had occurred, but could not elaborate on the circumstances or confirm a name.
