Woman gives birth to baby that doctors told her had been dead for weeks

Aimee Nolan says she has still not received an explanation.

A DUBLIN WOMAN has given birth to a baby boy doctors told her was dead.

26-year-old Aimee Nolan, who lives in Offaly, attended the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise in December after her local GP told her she couldn’t find a heartbeat.

After attending the hospital, she was told that staff couldn’t detect a heartbeat and that her baby had been dead for a number of weeks. Aimee and her husband broke the news to family, then attended the hospital to arrange a D&C procedure. A senior doctor scanned her and immediately it was clear there was a heartbeat.

Last Friday, Aimee gave birth to her second son, Evan.

She told Midlands 103 that the experience ruined her pregnancy as it made her extremely nervous.

It was hell. I really enjoyed my pregnancy on my first child, but this time around, it was nerve racking. I couldn’t sleep before appointments.

“I still keep looking at him, he’s a miracle.”

Even after the scan showed there was a heartbeat, Aimee says she was extremely nervous.

The HSE said in December it had would “fully review” the incident, but Aimee says that while she received an apology, she has yet to receive an explanation.

Aimee says that she has sympathy with women at Portlaoise Hospital who didn’t have the same outcome she did.

I feel so sorry for those women. My heart goes out to those families who didn’t have the outcome I had.

She said that she is delighted to have Evan home with his brother, Jack.

“It’s amazing to hold him. We’re thrilled to have him home.”
