A POST-MORTEM is due to be carried out today on the 45-year-old Irishman who died while attempting to swim the English Channel over the weekend.
Cork swimmer Paraic Casey fell ill off the coast of France early yesterday morning and was attended at the scene by emergency services before later being pronounced dead at a hospital in Calais.
His family said in a statement yesterday that he was close to finishing the crossing when he fell ill.
Casey undertook the crossing to raise funds for the St Vincent de Paul charity and St Patrick’s Marymount Hospice in Cork and has so far raised twice his target of €1,000. Supporters have been leaving messages of condolence on his MyCharity page.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul said yesterday that it was “shocked and saddened” to learn of Casey’s death and offered sincere condolences to his family.
His wife Riana described him as an “amazing, healthy, tough, loving husband, friend, brother, uncle, son, nephew and cousin”.
