Lightning strike cuts electricity to 11,000 homes in Wexford

ESB Networks says a transformer was damaged during storms, and that crews are working to restore power.

THOUSANDS OF HOMES across County Wexford are without electricity this morning due to overnight storms.

ESB Networks says the outage has been caused by damage to a transformer by lightning at about 7:30am this morning.

It is thought that about 11,000 homes are affected by the outage.

An ESB spokesman said crews were on site to repair the damaged transformer and that it hoped to return service to the affected homes by mid-morning.

The south-east had seen significant thunder and lightning storms last night and in the early hours.
