20,000 ESB customers are without electricity tonight

The south of the country has been worst affected by poor weather conditions.

SOME 20,000 HOUSEHOLDS are without electricity tonight.

ESB has confirmed that adverse weather conditions have led to 20,000 electricity customers in the south of the country losing their power supply.

The main areas affected are Cork, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Bandon, Gorey, Enniscorthy and Thomastown.

A spokesman for the company said that it is currently not possible to carry out repairs due to poor conditions, adding: “These customers may be out over night.”

He said that ESB Networks crews “will be dispatched at first light to carry out repairs”.

Customers have been advised to keep an eye on the PowerCheck App and follow @ESBNetworks for updates on the situation.

The esb crews do a great job often out all night working in extreem and adverse weather conditions so thankless fxxxxxs like John Nancy have power they deserve to have a good pension. Be thankful that these guys get out of bed at 2 in the morn on call to get your power back or leave their families at early in the evening to tend calls. Some people are thankless.

They get paid extra for being on call or leaving at two in the morning. I don’t think people need to be overly grateful for them doing their jobs. I also don’t think they should ever work in unsafe conditions either.

Always nice to see someone else Like myself having high praise for the ESB i always have great admiration for the ESB crews, they have a very difficult job & even more working out in electrical storms & not for one second would i trade places with them. They have a great twitter page which is updated to the second almost.. So what if they earn good pay & pension like ur thinking they earn it for the brave & difficult job they do. And praise should also be given to the contact centre staff who have also a tough job dealing with emergency calls its nor easy for them either

I’d like to see you trade places with them so David… So what if they get paid extra to get out at 2 in the morning, don’t you think they deserve it? Their job is difficult & dangerous at times connecting live wires but I suppose you could do it in ur sleep… I think we should be very grateful for the crews doing their job as we all believe it or not depend on electricity in some shape or form…

I think people seem to cycle between two extremes where either ESB workers are all overpaid layabouts or deserving of immense gratitude for doing their jobs.

I think they do a good job and are well paid for it for the most part. That ESB has roughly half the employees of a 20 years ago and is pretty efficient. That we should be glad they take safety very seriously.

Well to be fair Jack, if there is over a thousand lightning strikes an hour, the last place I would wanna be is on a steel hoist or standing on a pylon with cables in my hand and the threat of several million volts ready to shoot out the sky at any second.

During the storms last winter Eircom contractors got killed. ESB has a huge company wide focus on safety like nearly all large engineering firms. They are not going to get their own workers or contractors killed working in unsafe conditions because you dislike them.

Really nasty piece of work you are.

I’m not advocating that the works are carried out tonight. I’m merely commenting on the appeal by EsB to the public to keep an eye on mostly electric powered forms of media to find our when the power will come back.

If you have a smart phone you can check the app, using your data connection. The unmetered connections for the towers aren’t affected. But as it happens you are within range of 3 towers, one goes so the phone will pick up signal from one of the other towers. Lots of people use it this……quite simple really

Yeah, sure lets work in unsafe conditions to avoid bad PR. Sure they are only contractors and everyone knows they aren’t real people. I mean if they aren’t willing to except an unlimited amount of risk they don’t deserve the job.

ESB crews are paid to do a job. Most of them are a bunch of lazy 8astards. 8 men watching and 1 digging- get the picture- yes, we see… Thank you and Happy New Year! BTW- I’m without power, have no back up but did have some candles. recently returned after living in SE Asia for 8 years and have to say “didn’t expect power cuts like we experienced in Manila (3rd world country)” SORT IT OUT!!!
