What else could I get for… this €695,000 pricetag on this old school house

We take a look at what €695,000 could get you around the country.

THIS OLD SCHOOL building has a lot to recommend it to someone looking for something a bit quaint.

Originally built in 1885, the building served as the Union Hall National School for close to 100 years. The building was later converted into a hostel and at one time housed 12 bedrooms plus a dormitory.

During the making of Irish movie ‘War of the Buttons’ the property was used to house the cast while shooting.

The property is around an hour’s drive to Cork airport and around 15 minutes to Skibbereen. It lies across the bay from Glandore – which the property’s description says is “one of the most sought after destinations in west Cork”.

It has undergone an overhaul in recent years and is said to be in better condition now than at any other point in its history.

In an article about the property in the Examiner in 2012 – the previous owners were described as “serial house improvers”.

Here’s what €249,000 would get you around the rest of the country…

Kilkenny

This Georgian townhouse dates back to the mid 18th Century and was built by the Colles family. It was constructed from local materials at the time including limestone, marble and oak.

A plaque commemorating William F. Roe, a notable Irish engineer, is attached to the front of the building. Roe was born in the house in 1904.

In total it has five bedrooms and is on the market for €750,000. It comes with enough parking space for six vehicles.

Carlow

Continuing with the historical theme this house in Carlow claims to be located close to Ballon Hill, believed to be burial place of Cathair Mor, the King of Ireland around the year 177 AD.

The property is on the market for €650,000 and comes with five bedrooms. Known as ‘Larah House’, its raised position offer views of the surrounding counties, and its description boldly claims that “glimpses of Wales can be seen on a fine clear day”.

  Dublin

This home, known as ‘Aisling’, doesn’t quite have the same historical gravitas as the other properties. It is however located in Dalkey – one of the country’s most desirable residential areas.

The three-bedroom has the potential to be extended and comes with a sun terrace on top of its garage and a private garden to its rear.
