Prisoner attempted to escape after being brought to hospital from Cork prison

He knocked over an elderly woman as he attempted to escape.

A PRISONER WHO was brought to hospital yesterday afternoon knocked over an elderly woman as he attempted to escape from two prison officers.

The inmate was brought to the sexual assault unit after he claimed to have been assaulted in the prison.

Two officers escorted the inmate. He fell to the ground in the unit and his cuffs were removed to pick him up.

As one staff member went to get help the prisoner tried to make a run for it, and he knocked over an elderly patient while doing so.

The officers caught the prisoner and managed to restrain him after a struggle.

He was then brought back to Cork Prison with garda assistance.

The Irish Prison Service told TheJournal.ie that staff intervened quickly and the prisoner was returned without injury.
