US police hunt armed prisoner who escaped wearing a hospital gown

The man wrestled a gun off a guard and fled the hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after a suicide attempt.

POLICE IN THE US are searching for a dangerous prisoner who has escaped and is on the run wearing only a hospital gown in northern Virginia.

One shot was fired as a guard wrestled with the prisoner, Wossen Assaye, at Inova Fairfax Hospital where he had been taken for treatment after a suicide attempt. Assaye fled with a gun, setting off an hours-long lockdown and search.

The man was being held on federal bank robbery charges involving a suspect who fled on a bicycle. Police said Assaye carjacked a Toyota sedan after overpowering the guard at the hospital.

They also tweeted a picture of the escaped prisoner’s girlfriend:

They said he is considered armed and dangerous and advised the public to call police if they see him.

The lockdown at the hospital ended after police confirmed the carjacking but the search for Assaye continues.
