PSNI officers to be allowed apply for Garda Síochana jobs

Senior PSNI officers can now apply senior roles in the Republic of Ireland under new guidelines introduced by the government today.

SENIOR PSNI OFFICERS will be allowed to compete for promotion to senior ranks in the Garda Siochána under new rules introduced today by the Irish government.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said that the new rules will increase the cooperation that currently exists between the two police forces.

PSNI officers at the rank of Inspector or higher will now be able to compete for jobs as superintendent, chief superintendent and assistant commissioner in the Gardaí as part of an Intergovernmental Agreement on Police Co-operation.

“The agreement provided for cooperation between the two police forces at the level of exchanges without police powers and secondment with police powers,” the Minister said.

“The experience gained by officers from both sides continues to enhance the level of cooperation and exchange of information between both forces”.

Alan Shatter said that the new guidelines marked a “historic further step” in relations between the two forces.
