Which city has the best quality of living? (Hint: It's not Dublin, Cork or Limerick. Or Galway)

It’s not Waterford or Kilkenny either. Or Belfast.

THE LATEST QUALITY of living rankings for global cities are out.

Topping the chart from business consultants Mercer this year (as it did in 2014) is Vienna, Austria.

Dublin – ranking in 34th position (same as last year, again) – ties with Boston.

That may not seem all that high – but the Irish capital is the best-ranked city across the UK and Ireland.

London comes in at number 40, followed by Birmingham (52), Glasgow (55) and Aberdeen (57).

Belfast is at number 63 in this year’s list.

“Some of the factors placing Dublin in the top 50 for quality of living worldwide include an excellent choice of consumer goods, lower levels of air pollution and the socio-cultural environment,” Mercer Ireland consultant Noel O’Connor said.

Overall, European cities dominate the top of the rankings along with major cities in Australia and New Zealand.

Zurich, Auckland, and Munich are in second, third, and fourth places respectively. In fifth place, Vancouver is the highest-ranking city in North America and the region’s only city in the top 10.

Singapore (26) is the highest-ranking Asian city.

The Mercer lists, produced every year, are based on their regular Quality of Living Surveys. The most recent data was analysed between September and November last year.
