'How was this woman told her baby was dead, but there's a heartbeat?': The week in quotes

“It saddens me to be part of a parliament that created legislation that would bring about the type of grief that I heard explained to me yesterday.”

IT WAS A week of renewed debate on the 8th Amendment, anger in Sydney over a violent siege, and one where we said goodbye to the Metro Herald.

All that, and more, it’s the week in quotes:

It saddens me to be part of a parliament that created legislation that would bring about the type of grief that I heard explained to me yesterday. I just wonder how, as parliamentarians and legislators, we can correct that.

They all just kept looking at each other [as if to say] how was this woman told that her baby was dead, and we can all clearly see that there’s still a heartbeat there.

The fact is people make mistakes every day, I’m sure those who were involved in claiming the baby was dead didn’t wake up that morning with the intention of ruining those parents day but the point is the mistake was discovered and the baby will be fine. Let’s take a minute to think about all those parents who got the correct news from the professionals that they where to be robbed of their hopes and dreams………..

Exactly, a mistake was made by an individual. The system – which required a second scan being carried out prior to D&C – worked. This is an example of processes working.

Can we also admit that your comments and the quote above pre-suppose that the baby is already alive?? Can we also acknowledge that the baby in the second story, currently in it’s mother’s womb, is actually older than Aimee Nolan’s baby? I’m guessing the answer is no

I was sent for a scan at 10 weeks due to a bleed. A junior doctor and a nurse were there and the doctor sent the nurse for the consultant as there was no heartbeat. The consultant arrived and it wasn’t long before he had detected a heartbeat. The junior doctor could have been working for 24 hours straight before she tried to see the flicker on screen, perhaps she was only after starting her obstetric part of her training. Mistakes happen, that’s why they double check. In this case I think the gp was hasty sending the woman for a scan because the Doppler couldnt detect a heartbeat so early on. This case highlights that the double checking system works. I have no idea why the mother came out with the story as in fact she ended up with great news at the end of it, her baby is still alive.
