Rapist Larry Murphy released from prison

Sex offender collected in a grey taxi and whisked to freedom.

CONVICTED RAPIST Larry Murphy has been released from Arbour Hill prison this morning.

Murphy was released just after 10:10am this morning, leaving through the prison’s front entrance while the waiting media were held back by Garda barriers.

It had earlier been expected that Murphy would be released shortly after midnight to avoid a mass public disturbance, but Murphy (45) was instead collected by a grey taxi in the light of day, and drove off without comment.

He was released after serving 10-and-a-half years of his year sentence (with one year suspended) for the repeated rape and attempted suffocation of a Carlow woman in February 2000.

Gardaí have confirmed that a management plan is in place to monitor Murphy’s activities and whereabouts, as he is cosidered a high-risk offender. He will also be visited by a Garda at least once a month.

It is expected, however, that he will leave the country and flee to a new life in Britain.
