AS WE ALL get used to the new measures brought in to restrict the spread of the coronavirus, it’s fair to assume there’ll be a growing number of combatants in the battle for the remote control in most households.
With a greater than ever selection of content available – not just on TV but on phones and tablets, ironically, that paradox of choice can make it even more difficult to find something everyone can enjoy at the same time.
Here at The Remote we’ll be trawling through the TV listings to bring you a range of recommendations each week, including shows for the kids, favourites everyone in the household – either in family homes or apartment shares – can enjoy together, and must-see Irish-produced content the whole country will be watching as one.
We’ll focus mainly on free-to-air TV and freely available streaming services – with the occasional recommendation from subscription services too.

Quiz: This ITV series looks into the background of the scandal that rocked one of the UK’s most popular quiz shows, Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
It has a stellar cast – Matthew McFadyen and Sian Clifford play Charles and Diana Ingram, while Michael Sheen is unrecognisable as Chris Tarrant.
Watch as they try to unravel the question: did Diana cough at strategic moments in order to help her husband win?

Mrs Doubtfire: The classic modern comedy will make you laugh but also weep a tiny bit (sorry).
As you probably know, it’s about a couple who break up… and then a very unusual childminder shows up at the front door. Robin Williams and Sally Fields star in this 1993 gem, directed by Chris Columbus (and based on the Anne Fine book).

Moana: Settle down on the couch (whether you’ve kids or not) and enjoy this lovely Disney film about a young girl who sets off on a quest to save her island.

Jamie: Keep Cooking and Carry On: If there’s one thing that will bring us comfort at the moment, it’s cooking really nice food. Jamie Oliver’s new season helps us make the most out of leftovers and also gives us tips and hacks ‘tailored for the unique times we’re living in’. Yum.
When can I watch it? It’s on Channel4′s All4 service, which you need to register to watch.
The Last Dance: A documentary miniseries about an iconic sports team.
Relive the glory days of the Chicago Bulls – the highs and lows of the legendary team in the late 1990s, particularly focusing on the player Michael Jordan.
When can I watch it? It’s on Netflix from Sunday.
Learn to draw with Marvel Comics’ Will Sliney: Have a budding artist on your hands at home?
Irish artist Will Sliney from Marvel Comics will join the RTÉ Home School Hub team on RTÉ2 this week with a special new ‘learn how to draw’ feature. You might already be familiar with his #wewilldraw hashtag on Twitter, and now he has created 10 five minute shorts for the show, including two special characters, which he will teach kids how to draw.
When can I watch it? RTÉ Home School Hub continues every weekday on RTÉ2 at 11am, with a catch-up programme later in the day, RTÉ Home School Extra at 4.15pm.
Hardy Bucks: If you’re in need of a good laugh, check out Hardy Bucks, which ran from 2010 – 2018.
If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a mockumentary series about a group of rather interesting and wayward young men in a small town. It’s gas.
When can I watch it? It’s available on RTÉ Player box sets.
Murder She Wrote: On weekdays at lunch time, you can catch up with the amazing Jessica Fletcher in this long, long, long-running murder mystery serial. This is the ultimate escapist series to watch while eating lunch and will take you far, far away from all things coronavirus.

Seen a small child running on his ‘own’ and didn’t think to stop and check if he was with someone..?!!
Good point Derina… A couple of times I’ve been out walking my dog and I’ve seen young toddlers out walking on their own. I’ve stopped them and sure enough 20secs later their poor mother or father would be running down the street after them, panicked. The other problem nowadays is that people can be reluctant to interfere in case they are accused of something. Personally I wouldn’t care what people thought, a toddler out alone is in danger from all sorts of things so I’d make it my place to stay with them until Mammy/Daddy showed up or call the gardai.
Man approaches small child he doesn’t know with no parents nearby…
To be quite honest, I doubt I’d stop in those circumstances.
Have to say, sad state of affairs but I would have to agree with you and I think quite a lot of people would too.
That’s the thing Chris… As I said above, some people, men in particular would probably be afraid to stop and check. Sadly that’s the society we now live in. Fear of false accusation is terrible.
Very strange they did not stop and help, hold him until police came. ,What is wrong with folk today ?

It’s so sad I really hope he is found safe.
A few years ago I was walking home with my own son from the local shopping centre when I noticed a young boy of about 3 years old slowing walking along. I walked by him but I thought it strange him being on his own. He was about half a mile from the centre. I went back to him and I asked him where was his mum. He said he didn’t know. I brought him back to my house and I rang the security in the shopping centre on the off chance she was there. Sure enough his mother was frantically looking for him and had gone to security. She confirmed his name and what he was wearing. The security guy drove her to my house to collect him. The poor woman was hysterical I’ll never forget her face. To this day I’m so glad I went back to him, people shouldn’t be afraid to approach if it means saving a child’s life.
This story reminds me of Madeline McCann, I have a feeling the mother knows a lot more than she’s telling people

They were questioned by both the Portuguese police and the British so Im sure if they had anything to do with it one or other would have seen through their stories
The Portugese named them as suspects and after swearing they’d never leave Portugal without Maddie they did a legger back to the UK on a private chartered flight within a couple of days.
Its pointless mentioning the British Police as they have about as much authority in the case as you and I do

Just heard on news that its now believed he went missing sooner as he had not being to nursery school that day.
As someone said more this story then we are getting although hopefully Im wrong
Heard earlier today that there is now a possibility that he went missing before the timeframe previously given & if that is the case, the mother definitely knows something!!!!!
He might have found Narnia, or Captin Hook took him in the middle of the night.
But the story stinks.
There is something the mother knows that we don’t.
Yeh, I’d say she does. Like how it feels as a parent to have your child missing for 36 hours without knowing if the child is safe or alive? A sheer hell that many of us hopefully will never have to experience.

Well I personally would check my girls at least twice in between my putting them to bed & going myself!!!!! All depends on what time his mother went to bed herself tho I suppose!!
