Are you renting this year? Here's everything you need to know about insurance for renters

Giving yourself peace of mind as a renter is invaluable.

JANUARY IS THE time to set the tone for the year to come, and if you’re looking for a smart and simple way to feel safe and comfortable in the place you rent this year – we’ve got just the thing you need. We all know that where we live is more than simply a place to dump our stuff, it’s our sanctuary, our safe space, and it houses all the things that we hold dear to us.

With that in mind, it’s important to consider what would happen in the event of an unforeseen event, by having the right type of insurance as a renter you’re not only insuring the contents that you possess, but you’re giving yourself peace of mind and with that comes a sense of security that we all deserve.

What is renters insurance?

Renters insurance is a type of insurance offered by Allianz for the contents in your rented accommodation. It covers your contents from fire, storm, flood and smoke damage with the option to add additional cover for accidental damage. Accidental damage covers loss or damage caused by a sudden, unintended or unexpected event that is not the result of a deliberate act, an example of this would be if a visitor spills coffee on a rug or carpet.

A common misconception is that your possessions within your rented apartment are covered by your landlord’s insurance, this isn’t the case, so it’s important to get your own insurance when moving into rented accommodation.

Will it break the bank?

We understand the concern when it comes to costs. You’ve probably just put down first month’s rent, not to mention a security deposit, so worrying about how much renters insurance could cost on top of that is a valid concern. The good news is, hopefully it won’t break the bank! Allianz Renters Insurance starts from less than €10 a month — better value than most of the subscriptions we’re all paying for!

You can increase the cover to include accidental damage to all your possessions, and you can get cover for certain items that you take outside your rented accommodation if you need to. Whether you stick to the basics or want that extra level of protection Allianz has a policy to suit you. By getting in touch you can get a personalised quote in minutes by starting off with a pre-made package and tweak it until it’s just right.

Emergency assistance

Have you ever forgotten your keys or been locked out of your apartment? Experienced a water leak but don’t want to bother the landlord? An additional perk of having renters insurance with Allianz is that they’re there to assist you when you need it most, especially when the unforeseen events occur. The costs of the call out, labour and materials are covered (up to €300 per incident, four times per year).

Is it worth it?

A great question that needs answering, is it worth it to get renters insurance? We believe the answer is yes, and if you take a quick scan around your home and look at the high-value and personal possessions that you have, we think you’ll agree.

We all know that in a competitive rental market where things don’t always seem fair, it’s good to feel secure and protected. It’s also good to remember that just  because you may not own the place you’re living, doesn’t mean you don’t need extra protection for your belongings.
