Revenue collects €310m in property tax and household charge payments

The compliance rates for local property tax payments this year is 94%.

THE REVENUE COMMISSIONERS has so far collected €310 million in local property tax (LPT) payments and the and household charge (HHC).

The compliance rates for LPT payments for 2013 and 2014 stands at 95% and 94% respectively.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown was the most compliant last year at 95.8%, while Donegal was the least compliant at 89%.

Figures published today show that the Revenue is €10.5 million or ahead of its target.

Debt collection

For those that have not yet paid, the Revenue said it has moved to debt collection and enforcement action.

The Revenue said they have issued over 250,000 compliance letters in total for 2013 and 2014 in regards to the LPT.

Enforcement action letters are also being issued to property owners taxed under the self-assessment system.

The letter informs the property owner that the outstanding liabilities will be referred to sheriffs or solicitors for collection or will be the subject of attachment orders unless payment is immediately received.

Sheriff

They said that it is important to realise that once a debt is referred to a sheriff or solicitor the property owner must deal with that body rather than Revenue in regard to issues such as phased payments.

The property owner will also be liable to pay the sheriff’s costs which will increase the overall liability in the region of 10% of the amount due, said the Revenue.

For those taxed through the PAYE system, they said they had completed 40,000 mandatory deductions from wages/pensions were implemented for 2013 LPT and 46,000 deductions for 2014 LPT.

Over 61,000 deductions at source were taken in respect of HHC arrears and 7,300 HHC deferrals.

In relation to the self-employed and companies, nearly 9,600 tax clearance certificates were refused and over 12,200 income tax surcharges were applied.
