Cannabis worth €23k seized after detector dog Bailey finds it in vacuum cleaner

A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the seizure.

ALCOHOL, CIGARETTES, AND cannabis worth thousands have been seized in Dublin, Wexford and Carlow in the past 24 hours.

Today, Revenue officers seized over a kilo of herbal cannabis after its detector dog Bailey found it concealed in a vacuum cleaner at a home in Dublin 7.

The drugs have an estimated street value of €23,000; a 17-year old was arrested by Gardaí and is being detained at Store Street Garda Station under of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Yesterday evening, Revenue Officers at Rosslare Europort stopped and searched a truck as it disembarked a ferry from Fishguard, Wales.

Along with its legitimate consignment, the truck was found to be carrying alcohol without appropriate documentation or payment of tax due. Revenue seized the smuggled alcohol, with an estimated retail value of €22,400, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €11,600:

  • 900 litres of wine,
  • 460 litres of sparkling wine,
  • 95 litres of liqueurs.

In another operation which occurred yesterday, Revenue officers seized 6,680 unstamped cigarettes while conducting a search under warrant of a house in Carlow town.

The cigarettes, which contained a number of different brands, have a value of over €3,600 with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €2900. Investigations are ongoing with a view to a prosecution.

These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco products in the shadow economy.
