IRELAND’S RHASIDAT Adeleke claimed first place in the 400m at the Diamond League meet in Monaco on Friday.

The Tallaght athlete triumphed with a time of 49.17 in what was her first ever Diamond League as she came in ahead of beating the Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands and USA’s Kendall Ellis. It was also her second-fastest time ever as she continues her preparations for the Paris Olympics.

“It was a great one,” Adeleke said after the race.

“I think it was very well executed, I was very controlled and I was really able to take control of the run from the start.

“I was running a bit scared because I was on the outside of my main competitors. But I just wanted to make sure I executed my plan for where I was in the race and I think I did that.

“I’ve wanted a Diamond League win for a really long time and to have one here at this beautiful stadium, I’m really grateful.”

When asked if the 400m was her main event now, she agreed but added that she feels she has “unfinished business” in the 100m and 200m. She also said that her next appearance will be the London Diamond League at the end of this month.

Ciara Mageean was also in action in Monaco, competing in the rarely run 2000m event. The European 1500m champion clocked a time 5:43.06 to finish in 10th, and take second place on the Irish all-time list.

Elsewhere, Limerick’s Sarah Lavin also had an encouraging warm-up for the Olympics this evening as she won with a time of 12.82 (-0.7m/s) at the Morton Games. Cathal Doyle of Clonliffe Harriers claimed victory in the iconic Morton Mile in a time of 3:52.07.
