The Catherine Walker designed pink silk dress which Princess Diana wore on a State visit to India in February 1992 was one of the most lavish and expensive of all her dresses.
It was during this visit to India that Diana was famously photographed sitting alone at the Taj Mahal “the monument to lost love” which caused speculation about her marriage. Her official separation from Prince Charles was announced in December of the same year.
The inspiration for the embroidery on the dress came from the lid of an Indian inlaid marquetry box discovered in a London market.
The sleeveless dress is densely embroidered with three dimensional exotic blooms in looped and satin stitched corded silk, layered pink sequins, centred by amber, green and pink crystal beads. The bolero jacket is similarly embroidered and lined in ivory silk. The plain silk cuffs have three large buttons inset with emerald and pink rhinestones.
