A good day’s work.

MEMBERS OF THE Arklow RNLI were tasked to carry out an animal rescue this afternoon – after a seal became entangled in fishing gear near the entrance to the Co Wicklow harbour.

Two members of the volunteer crew ventured out on board a rescue craft to help the “tired and stressed” marine mammal.

Michael Fitzgerald and Brian Heaney moved the seal to an area near the shore, before cutting it loose from the tangled ropes and lines.

The animal rested for a while on rocks, before making for open water.

“Luckily we were able to get to the seal in time to save it,” Fitzgerald said.

“When members of the public come across injured, stressed animals like this trapped in fishing gear or injured – they should inform the authorities immediately, they should never enter the water to try to save the animal.”
