Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry both make hole-in-one at Pebble Beach Pro-Am

McIlroy is just a shot behind the leaders Jake Knapp, Justin Rose, and Cam Davis.

LAST UPDATE | 31 Jan

RORY MCILROY AND Shane Lowry both remarkably made holes-in-one during their first rounds in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

McIlroy’s tee shot on the par-three 15th at Spyglass Hill flew directly into the hole, while Lowry recorded his at the par-three seventh hole at Pebble Beach.

It was McIlroy’s second career ace after his first one arrived in Round 1 of the 2023 Travelers Championship, on TPC River Highlands’ eighth hole.

“Honestly, it was lucky, I don’t see many balls nowadays go straight in the hole and stay in the hole,” McIlroy said afterwards.

“Pretty fortunate because it could have come out and went back in the water or do anything. It was a good swing, good wedge shot.”

Lowry has previously recorded hole-in-ones on the 16th at August National in the Masters and the famous 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass.

The six-under 66 leaves him a tie for eighth, the same score as Lowry, as the pair lie two shots behind leader Russell Henley on eight-under.

McIlroy, who began his round on the 10th, moved to three-under after that ace and he finished strongly with birdies on the 6th, 7th and 9th holes. Lowry reached the turn in four-under 32 in his round, before picking up another shot on the par-four 3rd. He then bogeyed the 5th and parred the 6th, incurring penalty shots on both holes, before that memorable ace on the 7th.

Waterford’s Seamus Power is three-under after his first round and in a tie for 37th.

World number one Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, was one shot back on five under after an opening 67.

Scheffler, playing in his first tournament since injuring his hand in a freak Christmas dinner accident last month, started slowly with a bogey on the first at Spyglass Hill.

He was soon in the groove, though, with two birdies before the turn and four more down the stretch to finish the day three off the lead.

On the LPGA Tour, at the Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Leona Maguire is in a tie for fourth after the opening round. Maguire’s two-under 70 sees her five shots off the lead held by South Korea’s Kim A-Lim.
