Ryanair to axe more services at Shannon

…Just after Aer Lingus announces cuts in winter flights at the airport.

RYANAIR BOSS Michael O’Leary is expected to announce later this afternoon that the airline will be further reducing services at Shannon airport.

The airline has blamed the recent decision by the Shannon Airport Authority to raise charges at the airport, on top of the government’s €10 travel tax, as the reason behind the move.

One Ryanair plane and 40 staff handle 11 routes at Shannon. The airline has already reduced its winter capacity due to the €10 travel tax.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey told the Clare Herald:

This expected news this afternoon is another hammer blow for the region, which is already suffering more than most in the economic downturn. Unemployment levels here are above the national average, and inward foreign investment has slowed down hugely.

Aer Lingus recently announced its decision to cancel transatlantic services from Shannon Airport for the first three months of 2011.
