Americans thought Saoirse Ronan's earrings referenced the North/South divide in Ireland

What.

The 88th Academy Awards - Arrivals - Los Angeles AP / Press Association Images AP / Press Association Images / Press Association Images

AS THE DUST settles on the 2016 Oscars, we can reflect on how our very own Saoirse Ronan absolutely slayed on the red carpet.

Most of the attention, of course, has been on her fabulous emerald green dress – which most people here took as a nod to her home country.

But now the analysis has moved on to her mismatched earrings

One white, one green – and winning plaudits all over the place.

Apparently the ABC coverage in the States said that the white and green were specifically a reference to Ireland

mismatch Twitter Twitter

And commenters on a fashion website said they heard the announcer say it was to symbolise the divide between Ireland and Northern Ireland

I was only half paying attention to the red carpet, but I seem to recall someone attributing her mismatched earrings as a symbolic nod to the division of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Did anyone else hear that?

With another commenter backing that up:

That was my first thought upon seeing it.

So the theory was out there

mismatch2 Twitter Twitter

Despite the fact that no evidence for this assertion exists as of yet, the earrings will go down in history in the US as some sort of heroic cross-border symbol

Which is a cause of mirth for any Irish people thinking they might be over analysing the situation

aoiph @aoiph Twitter @aoiph Twitter

We’ll need Saoirse to confirm this before we can even think that’s what they stood for

Thanks, TV.

More deer to see on my cycle home. Very welcome indeed. Love cycling the phoenix park into work. Best thing left in Dublin.

Ridiculous attempt at a dramatic headline. There’s been no assertion that red deer could be introduced to the park. Minister was asked would he do it, he said he didn’t know if was possible so he’d refer the question to officials.

You’d swear there was a task force working on the issue or trying to figure it all out. A by and by question asked and by and by answer provided.

Better not tell PETA, or they might crash into some Deer and then try and sue the government.

    Sounds ridiculous, right?

Then again, 2 of their members tried that back in 2002 .

At least it might make drivers stick to the speed limit, hit a fallow deer and it costs a few hundred to repair hit a red deer and it’s a write off, don’t think it would happen, they are more wild than tame. Would be nice for tourism if they don’t leave Dublini to see the real Ireland.
