Here's What Happened Today: Saturday

Everyone’s talking about the hours-long protest that trapped Joan Burton in her car, a shooting in Dublin, and the latest ‘Band Aid’ lineup.

#LONDON The great and good of the music world (and Chris Martin) arrived to record the latest Band Aid single.

#THE NETHERLANDS 60 people were arrested as a protest took place over ‘Black Pete’ — the traditional sidekick of St Nicholas.

#CONGO And after a three month battle, the Democratic Republic of Congo has declared itself free of Ebola.

INNOVATION

  • Have you seen the ESA comet lander’s final tweets, before it powered down? They’re pretty heartbreaking.
  • And apparently the internet has a major grudge against Grandpa Joe from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Why? [Buzzfeed Tech]

PARTING SHOT

For no particular reason, here’s a video of a monkey buying some juice from a vending machine.

(By the way, if it’s vending machines you’re after — we have another pretty interesting article about them elsewhere on the site this evening.)

And before anyone says what happened in Jobstown today was not peaceful they should ask themselves if it wasn’t peaceful why were only two arrests made – one for public order and the other for damage to a police car, what ever that was!

Well said. The main agressors were the Gardai who were pushing people and dragging them around the place. Have to say, the people of Tallaght did well not to take the bait. It was pure incitement.

@ Christine. Your profile says you’re a B&B owner. Doesn’t that mean you can write off most of your water costs as a business expense?

Jesus Christine how meny times do people have to be told that water is already paid for through taxes before the penny drops.

Worst political scandal EVER about to erupt in Britain shortly (regarding child abuse, carried about by senior Westminster politicians since the 1970′s).
This story has been brewing for months now – & not a peep from the Irish media.
Mainstream media trying very hard to keep the lid on this one – but the story is too big to be contained.
Media ONLY feed us with the stories that suit their own agenda. That much has become very clear over the past few weeks. We only hear what they want us to hear.

    @christine

Does every country pay their politicians the extortionate wages we do? Does every country pay USC? Does every country pay an average if €1100 a month for childcare? No!
It doesn’t matter about what other countries pay/don’t pay
I’ve lived all over EU and I’ve never had such poor standard of living as here in my home country.
We are working literally to pay taxes and I’ve had enough!!
