The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #SAVITA: The full report into the death of Savita Halappanavar at University Hospital Galway in October has found that there wasn’t enough recognition of how severe her situation was, “which led to passive approaches and delays in aggressive treatment”. The Minister for Health James Reilly has described the HSE’s report as hard-hitting, adding that it “doesn’t pull any punches”.

2. #JILL MEAGHER: The parole system in Victoria has been overhauled in the wake of Jill Meagher’s murder. It comes after it emerged this week that Adrian Ernest Bayley, the man who raped and murdered Meagher in Melbourne last year, was out on parole at the time of the attack even though he had a long history of violence against women.

3. #JOHN MCGUINNESS: The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has said that in “seriously, exceptional circumstances” the State should cover the costs of a minister’s spouse travelling with them. John McGuinness was responding to questions over the controversy that he brought his wife on three government trips, all paid for by the tax payer, when as he served as a junior trade minister in 2007 and 2008.

4. #TAX APPLE: The Unites States want to adopt a “carrot and stick” tax approach, where all foreign incomes are subject to tax. The tactics are aimed at tackling tax avoidance by the likes of Apple and Google, who have been criticised for ‘booking’ much of their international income through subsidiaries in Ireland where it can be subjected to much lower tax.

5. #GREECE: A 24-hour general strike is taking place in Greece following the closure of the state-run TV station ERT. The strike follows the surprise move to shut down the state broadcaster with the loss of 2,700 jobs.
