The school-leaving age is set to be increased. Is it a good idea?

It’s currently 16, should it be higher?

THE SCHOOL LEAVING age will be raised from 16 as part of government plans to develop skills and education.

The government yesterday launched the National Skills Strategy 2025 and outlined objectives in education and training over the next ten years.

Part of the plan features a focus on increasing inclusion in the education sector. One the proposals under this objective is to increase the age at which an individual can legally leave school.

The current age is 16 but a review is to be carried out “with a view to increasing it”.

The strategy also promises to support 50,000 traineeships over the next five years and the establishment of a National Skills Strategy.

A 2018 review is also planned into the level and trend of female participation in apprenticeships.

“Even in subjects like biology and medicine where females are well represented at undergraduate levels, there is a deterioration in participation at more senior research levels,” the strategy document argues.
