Seán Gallagher secures fourth local authority nomination

A second independent candidate has secured enough support from county and city councils to get their name on the ballot.

INDEPENDENT PRESIDENTIAL candidate Seán Gallagher has secured the formal support of Clare County Council and Cork City Council, bringing him up to the required level of four local authorities.

Last week, Gallagher received the formal backing of Meath and Leitrim County Councils.

Today, the candidate addressed local authorities in Carlow and Wexford as he continued to push for the four nominations needed to get his name onto the ballot. However, this evening Wexford declared its support for his rival, Mary Davis. Carlow has deferred its vote on the proposal to vote for a nominee until next week to allow other independent candidates time to approach them.

Gallagher’s independent rival has already built up enough county council support to guarantee her place in the election. Davis, with the support of eight councils, was the first person in this election to secure her place through the backing of local authorities.

Meanwhile, Labour’s Michael D Higgins is the frontrunner in the election race, with 36 per cent support in the latest opinion poll. Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell came in second at 24 per cent. A third of the poll’s respondents said they had not yet decided who to vote for, they will not vote or they will not vote for any of the four current candidates.
