Biography

Lynn Boylan has been a senator since 2020 and is the Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Climate Justice. She was previously MEP for the Dublin Constituency from 2014 to 2019.

Question time
What do you deem the most important issue for the European Union now and what would you like to see happen in that area?

There are quite a few issues that are of critical importance in the EU at the moment which include the climate and biodiversity crises, defending Ireland's neutrality, workers rights, social rights and public services.

The EU institutions need to continue to be leaders in climate action but they need to move away from market based solutions to ones based on climate justice. Corporate polluters need to be regulated and workers and families must be afforded a Just Transition.

In terms of workers rights, Ireland is an outlier at the EU in terms of collective bargaining rights and I would fight to ensure that workers in Ireland have the right to unionise like their EU counterparts.

Ireland has a long standing tradition of military neutrality that has served us well and is supported by the majority of Irish people. I am very concerned at the direction of travel of the Von Der Leyen Commission and would oppose any increased EU militarisation.

What group will you be aligned with in the European Parliament, should you win a seat? What do you see as their priorities?

Sinn Féin works collaboratively at an EU level with lots of MEPs. When I was an MEP previously, I succeeded in having a number of motions and reports passed by large majorities through working collectively and engaging with MEPS directly. Currently there are no discussions about Sinn Féin joining another political group. If I am lucky enough to be elected in June, depending on the make up of the next Parliament and what groups are successfully formed, I will be joining the group that is best aligned with my values.

Why should someone vote for you?

I am committed to delivering for the people of Dublin in the EU. As a former MEP, I have a strong track record of bringing the EU to the communities of Dublin and bringing communities to the EU. Now more than ever, it is essential that we have MEPs who are in touch with the issues on the ground in Dublin and who will not disappear for 5 years and lose touch with the people they represent. Electing me as part of a strong Sinn Féin team of MEPS will ensure that right across this island, there is a team of MEPs who will resist any further dilution of our neutrality and tax sovereignty and who will fight to ensure that climate action is aligned with the principles of Climate Justice and a Just Transition.
