Question time
What do you deem the most important issue for the European Union now and what would you like to see happen in that area?
There are those that argue that the people of Europe would be better off if the European Union was disbanded entirely. The most important issue for the European Union is the debunking of this notion by proving its relevance and that it adds value in the face of critical challenges like affordable housing; climate change and biodiversity loss; social rather than only narrow economic policies; and international peace and security.
What group will you be aligned with in the European Parliament, should you win a seat? What do you see as their priorities?
I will be aligned with the Socialists and Democrats (S&Ds) – the Labour Party is a member of the Party of European Socialists which is represented in the parliament by Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. The S&Ds are the second largest political grouping in the European Parliament and Ireland currently has no representation in them which means we cannot influence its efforts to implement progressive social and economic policies through the European Parliament. This renders the Irish people unrepresented in this work and places us at a distinct disadvantage. This compounds the fact that we do not and have never had a centre-left progressive government at national level.
Why should someone vote for you?
I will bring Galway and the Midlands North West to the heart of a Social Europe
I have over 20 years of public service experience and live in Galway with a young family. I am asking for your number 1 vote in the European elections so that I can focus on how cities like Galway, and our rural communities can be better served by our membership of the E.U. If elected, my priorities will be:
- Introducing a European Plan for Affordable Housing
- Addressing climate change and biodiversity loss through a
- Just Transition that supports urban and rural communities
Improving social rights at European level, for children, families, people with disabilities and the elderly.
We need an economy that serves society, not the other way around.
