Biography

Saoirse McHugh was a Green Party candidate for the EU Parliament elections in 2019 but was unsuccessful. She left the party in 2020 when it went into a coalition government with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Question time
What do you deem the most important issue for the European Union now and what would you like to see happen in that area?

The agriculture-environment relationship is the most important issue. We need a common food policy that brings together production, trade, processing, distribution, environment, and health and allows us to plan a path forward where we all have access to nutritious, local food, produced fairly and in a way that protects the environment.

What group will you be aligned with in the European Parliament, should you win a seat? What do you see as their priorities?

Probably the Left group. Their priorities are to protect and restore nature and climate while working to make sure that all policies improve the lives of ordinary people.

Why should someone vote for you?

We need a young, independent, progressive MEP who will fight for a progressive future for rural Ireland where we take action on climate and biodiversity and ensure that the good of the public is put central to all legislation coming from the EU.
